Too many old virus definition on a WinXP SEP12 Client

Hi!

Recently I've noted that about 3,0 GB of old Virus defs are stored in:

I've two questions:

1) How to safely delete the uneeded old definitions

2) how to prevent that - in the future - will be the same issue.
